Here at PCGamesN we love turn-based strategy. But we also accept that it’s a complex genre, and that great swathes of it have settled into especially complex sub-genres like 4X and Paradox-style grand strategy. These are the strategy monoliths and to newcomers they can be scary.
Order of Battle: World War II does things a little differently. A more accessible turn-based strategy game that shakes up genre conventions and includes a free-to-play tutorial, it’s a great starting point for the strategy-curious. Usually you’d have to pay for single-player content beyond said tutorial, but we’re giving away a whopping 2,000 copies of Winter War, an expansion in which you’ll lead the Finnish Army against the invading forces of both Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union.
Note that Winter War isn’t the game’s most recent DLC – that distinction goes to Red Star, which released just one month ago. Red Star puts you in charge of the Soviet army, and pits you first against the might of Imperial Japan in 1938 before concluding with the Battle of Moscow in 1941. It adds 13 new scenarios, and a ton of new Soviet units, commanders, and specialisations. If you enjoy what you play in Winter War, you can pick up Red Star on Steam for $14.99 (£11.39).
