Team Fortress 2 is about to get its competitive matchmaking update

The actual news here might be that — in this future year of 2015 — Team Fortress 2 still has players wandering around in server browsers and stumbling into random matches like cavemen, but Valve's shooter finally appears to be on the verge of receiving a long anticipated update that introduces competitive matchmaking and ranked ladder games.

This could turn Team Fortress 2 on its head, which is hard to do in a game with so many hats.

Splat Fortress is a Splatoon mod for Team Fortress 2, complete with squids

Sometimes, when my PC isn’t looking or is out shopping, I’ll sneak into the living room and fire up the Wii U for a few matches of Splatoon. Yes, I am a man who enjoys smearing his squid ink everywhere. The inky shooter is spreading, too. A Nintendo exclusive it might be, but modding has once again come to the rescue.

Splat Fortress is Splatoon crammed inside Team Fortress 2. Take a look below.

Team Fortress 2's Gun Mettle update adds CS:GO like weapon skins and campaigns

Team Fortress 2 is a few hours away from receiving one of its biggest updates yet. The Gun Mettle update will offer a campaign to players, providing two contracts per week for three months, giving them specific challenges to fulfill. If you’re good enough, you’ll be awarded with a brand new weapons case, which contains juicy new weapons that sport unique skins.

Even if you don’t want to pay the $5.99, it’s all good - although the majority of the new maps are tied to the Gun Mettle Campaign pass, a brand new Valve-made map will be free for everyone.

If you’re a fan of Team Fortress 2, you’ll be a bigger fan of the Maps Workshop beta Valve have just announced. It’s a service that utilises the Steam Workshop to bring user-made maps to all of Team Fortress 2’s player base to enjoy. Map makers can use the new tool to get feedback on their custom maps, as well as a place to gain recognition.

Team Fortress 2 is picking up competitive matchmaking

Matchmaking is something that can really take the headache out of getting into a multiplayer game. It’s something that Team Fortress 2 lacks, meaning you’ll have to sift through a server browser to find something ideal.

Not for much longer though. According to the chaps at TeamFortressTV, Valve has informed them that competitive matchmaking is on its way to Team Fortress 2, along with a Counter-Strike: Global Offensive style stream list on the main menu.

“As things go wrong and the BLU team’s diabolical plan is revealed, will RED have what it takes to survive?", asks Source film director The Winglet. And then answers: “Of course they will, BLU sucks."

Team Fortress 2 players can now design and sell their own taunts

As part of their ongoing efforts to have players create pretty much all of the content in Team Fortress 2 by themselves, Valve have launched the Taunt Workshop, which allows creators to add their own custom animations to the game.

A taunt is a short animation that you can trigger at will to gloat over the demise of an enemy or loved one. Usually it's something egregious like a rude dance or an obscene gesture. Now? Now it can be anything, and like most other kinds of user created content in Team Fortress 2, the best-rated examples will be sold on the official Mann Co. Store, with a share of the profits going to the creator.

Team Fortress 2 bulks up with Mannpower: a beta mode with grappling hooks for all

There’s something taking shape in the stocking of the Team Fortress 2 Smissmas update - the same patch divined decades ago in classics like ‘Merry Smissmas Everyone’, ‘Last Smissmas’ and ‘Driving Home for Smissmas’.

It’s named Mannpower Mode, and enlivens Capture the Flag with two of gaming’s best-loved features: grappling hooks and power-ups.

Team Fortress 2 bolstered by body warmers and bathing equipment in End of the Line

Even before Team Fortress 2 and Dota 2 item makers starting earning an average of $15,000 each, the shooter community was getting organised. Last year, TF2 item creators marshalled a team and, with the backing of Valve, released the Robotic Boogaloo update to “huge success".

The Boogaloo was a test, to see if the TF2 community could follow through on an ambitious project with deadlines - and they passed. Hence today’s End of the Line release - a bundle of community cosmetics, taunts and tools, built and deployed by the most able fans on the Steam Workshop.

Team Fortress 2 Tomb Raider item contest (inevitably) puts the Heavy in short shorts

Last month, Valve announced their Team Fortress 2 Tomb Raider contest for Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris - the first occasion on which tie-in items had been thrown open to the Workshop community to design.

At the time, Valve told potential creators that the only thing they didn’t want to see was the Heavy in short shorts. Many, many short short designs later, they’ve picked the best - alongside two other winners and three runners-up.

Team Fortress 2 update brings tweaks to pl_upward, improves client stability

Did you know? On the consoles, there’s a carbonite version of Team Fortress 2 that plays exactly the same way now as it did in 2007. Imagine that. Over here, it’s been onwards and upwards for the past seven years - a cycle of perpetual improvement for one of the best first-person shooters on PC.

It’s been four years since the Engineer Update that introduced Upward as a Payload map, for instance - but Valve are still trimming and weeding, and bettering the performance of the game overall.

Team Fortress 2 Workshop hammered into better shape

The Team Fortress 2 Workshop has been the engine room of the game's item-centric rebirth - so it’s only fitting that Valve should lavish the same attention on it as they do one of the best first-person shooters on PC. The community hub’s homepage and queue system have both been upgraded, with the goal of forefronting the most interesting and relevant items.

Valve tap Team Fortress 2 Workshop community for Tomb Raider items

The Team Fortress 2 universe is strong and flexible enough to absorb just about anything you can hold in your hands or balance on your head. In the last couple of years, it’s become the happy host of themed items for about four dozen Steam games.

Ordinarily, Valve work with developers and a venn diagram to come up with a suitable crossover point. But for Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris, Squeenix are opening up Tomb Raider history to the TF2 Workshop community.

Valve to tackle "transparently unfair" distribution of Team Fortress 2 Halloween gifts

Scream Fortress 6 is coming, and with it the flurry of presents Team Fortress 2 players have come to expect over the last four spooky seasons. But Valve have revised the gift system for this year’s event, in the hope of ending the iffy practices of Halloweens past.

“The Halloween experience for many players now consists of sitting idle in a custom server while a plugin teleports them from gift spawn point to gift spawn point," write the dev team.

“We feel comfortable characterizing the current system as blatantly and transparently unfair."

Team Fortress 2 now lets players treat themselves to an early Halloween

You won’t miss Halloween in Team Fortress 2 when it comes - there’ll be an exceptional comic, and a funny blog post, and maybe one of those webpages that changes as you scroll through it.

But if you like, you can start early. Valve have pushed out a new TF2 update that unlocks the use of spells and cosmetic items usually reserved for the holiday.

Valve fix Team Fortress 2's most powerful exploit: items_game.txt

items_games.txt is the bank vault of Team Fortress 2 files - the place where the names, stats and limitations of the hats and weapons in one of the best PC first-person shooters are stored. It was cracked months ago by users on the TF2 subreddit, and Valve have patched up resulting exploits as they’ve emerged. But it's only with this week’s update that the dev team finally appear to have plugged the source of the problem.

Valve announce the 2014 Saxxy Award winners (they're all TF2 shorts)

The fourth annual Saxxy Awards promised a more varied line-up than we’ve been used to, thanks to the release of Left 4 Dead and Portal assets to Source Filmmakers. Which makes it all the more surprising to see TF2 creations claim every top spot in the competition. We’ll be waiting til next year to see the fruits of that change.

There’s no faulting the victors for quality, though. The creator of this year’s winning short did a canny thing - made a film that said something about the lives of Valve animators. Take a look.
