I tried blinking around the site but I didn't have enough bone charms. Oh wait, /dishonest?/ My bad.

So perhaps it's just me, but the site always seems to take a long time to load each page.  Not sure if it's just the amount of articles you keep to an individual page, or something else, but trying to scroll down is often annoying.

My guess would be Firefox, the page delay is most likely caused by our facebook and twitter integration. Good news is that this is currently being worked on and we'll report when the page optimisations are up.

Elvis - could you give me a few more details. Where are you based? What browser/system do you use? Is it on specific pages, or across the site?

Sure.  I'm in Wallington (so South London / Croydon area)  I use Firefox on my laptop and Chrome on my PC.  Generally it's on the home page.  When I click through to an individual article, it seems to be fine, but the home page always seems to be a little ponderous.

Thanks for the info. Looks like it is the problem we are working on. Chrome should be better but I have noticed it stutters. Article pages contain far fewer facebook/twitter widgets and hence should load quicker

Update: A recent update should have made the site a lot more responsive in general but especially for those using firefox.

Let me know if you are still struggling and we'll see what can be done.

1. The site works fine on my PC (Firefox) and phone (Chrome), but sometimes on my iPad it re-renders over and over. I've just tried it again now and it works fine (of course, such is the rule of desktop support), but when it does it it's pretty much unreadable. Possibly related to signal strength - I'm right next to my router at the moment, usually I'm upstairs.

2. Of the three gaming blogs I read, PCGamesN seems to have more articles, faster. Not as lengthy as the others, but that's okay - I don't need three sites which all do the same thing. You also pick up on news that the others seem to miss. Well done for finding a niche.

3. Not a criticism, or even feedback particularly, just an observation. I find it very peculiar how few comments are posted on the articles here. I don't think it's from any lack of readers, maybe the comments get a little lost between the article above and the 'grid' of article links underneath.

4. I'm sure others have said it, but the reader submitted articles come across as second class with no image. I can see why there would be problems with letting users upload images, but there must be a happy medium surely?

Hey Dog Pants, thanks for the feedback. Very helpful. I'll look into the iPad issue as it's not one I've come across before.

As for finding a happy medium... Most of them are happy due to the amount of money the rip off people for cold reading... Oh that sort of happy medium. Yes I agree with your sentiments, our site is constantly evolving so hopefully we'll get this one nailed as well as developing the community more.

Agree with the comments...comment. I think just from the few hours this forum has been around shows that there is an active community visiting PCGamesN and wanting to talk, but something stops them.

Personally I don't think the commenting is obvious enough from the front page, maybe a sidebar widget with recent comments? Not sure, never really know what kicks of commenting.

1
Tim Edwards Avatar

I think you're probably right about the comments being shown up on the front page. We try and display community stuff on content pages to the right, but it would a pretty easy fix to add it to the homepage as well.

1
PCGamesN Dev Avatar

Yeah there is obviously something blocking people from commenting. Like you say, the forum is immediately getting people talking. We do show recent comments and forum posts but we have constraints to avoid the whole sidebar being taken up with one popular forum / article. Perhaps these constraints are too much and perhaps we should make more of an effort to 'invite' people to join in.

It is just a suggestion as i'm new to forums as well but it would be great if you get a notice when somebody gives you a response or reacts to your comment. So you can check your profile and see whats new.

Maybe you are already working on that. Maybe your waiting till the forums pick up so again its just a suggestion:)

Also I think it's fair to say we won't go down the 'popular social site' method and email you everytime one of your friends mentions you/changes their socks/is tired. I believe this is too invasive.

Yeah, the e-mail part is unnecessary. I follow you in that, but if you can look at your account here and see the threads you posted in that would be great:)

When I'm browsing the news stream on my phone, particularly if I scrolled down quite a long way, the content takes a little longer to load in as I quickly scroll back up to the top. When I do this I've seen what look like Google ads right at the top. Once the content loads in again it can't be seen, so it appears that they hide behind the top bar.

What's all that about? I'm not imagining it am I (since I can't currently recreate it)?

Hey Dog Pants, you are quickly becoming our chief beta tester!

Can you give me a couple of details about your phone, don't need to much, if it's iPhone then the make and OS version, I recon you're an android guy though? If so then the current OS version and browser you are using will be fantastic.

Think this is more javascript nonsense but I'll get back to you. Thanks again for the input.

*edit* You have already supplied me with the bulk of what I need from your previous comment. Phone is chrome but you have iPad as well. I'll do some more testing on my galaxy S3 and see.

Not a problem, just pointing stuff out I see.

You're right about the OS, I'm using Android 4.1.2. I'm actually using the native OS browser, not Chrome as I stated in my earlier post (I'm a bit of a phone luddite, I prefer things with keyboards).

Just tried to visit the site on FireFox. HUGE initial delay. I mean like, 10seconds before I could scroll down the front page. Just seems to take time loading images in Firefox. No trouble at all in Chrome.

Hi Shriven,

Thanks for the info, something has happened in the last few weeks which has meant firefox is embarrassingly slow for our site. I am already working on a fix. I hope to get something up next week which will help and would be very grateful if you can let me know if it has improved things. I always test in multiple browsers but I cannot test each and every combination of PC/OS/Browser so input from you will be gratefully received.

Hi, can I go with a little addition, do you consider setup an RSS auto-discovery?

On main page you have a nice never-ending strip, but an RSS button is on footer which makes an subscription a little harder.

Please excuse my french and caffeine/procrastination induced enthusiasm, but this site fucking rocks!

Apart from the database hiccups, that can be blamed on the Hearthstone giveaway i'm sure, everything seems to be running fine.

The biggest gripe i have at the moment is the lack of discussion features in the comments - no comment/reply tracker: i can't see what comments i made in what articles and when has someone answered them, in order to, possibly, engage in an interesting discussion. And the inability to edit/delete comments (in the case of the accidental double post due to a database hiccup, or an annoying typo that torments my inner grammar nazi).

1
Excessum Avatar

Just came across a peculiar bug. You lose the "reply" button in forums and in the comment section on the main site whenever you switch the post filtering method (Most recent Most popular).

And you might want to start a bug report thread on the forums, just in case :P

Damn, Pete's gonna hate me.

I like the site, I've been following it for a few weeks now. What bothers me is that you can't reach the footer due to the infinite scrolling. A lot has been written about this problem, removing the footer and moving the links to the top of the page is a solution.

Hi there! I mostly really like this site but for the last week or so I've found that almost everytime I visit it I'm greeted with a very loud video ad in a small window, halfway down the page. I don't like adblocking so if anything I'll likely simply stop visiting... but seriously, there must be some other way to make this work? Autoplaying videos by itself are the devil, but keeping them small and out of sight is just evil... and lets not even mention what happens if I happen to open two or three articles in new tabs! It makes the site feel as tacky as a wikia article.

1
Tim Edwards Avatar
521

Hey,

That shouldn't be happening - can you take some screens of the ad please and email them to [email protected]

Thanks!

1
GeoGonzo Avatar
10

Well, this is embarrasing, now they don't show up. They've been replaced by google ads without any sound and even with an option to mute them, which I'm sure wasn't there before.

I'm running no extensions in Google Chrome, so... crap, I wonder if I'm simply infected with malware. I'll go check that. My apologies if it was a problem on my end!

Dog Pants Avatar

I've just noticed, the comment notifications on the right hand side of the screen, amongst the little article boxes, incorrectly state the number of comments in the thread. For example, an article with four comments would say:

"Dog Pants and 4 others commented on Half Life 3 announced as free-to-play Windows 8 exclusive"

When in fact there are only three others.

I've just noticed that there are a finite number of forum posts displayed in the index, but no way of going back through older ones. Assuming they're still there could we get a few navigation buttons so we can browse through them?

I can't post on the site anymore. It gives me an error each time. Something about Ajax HTTP error code 500.

The error is still there 1 hour later. I still can't post comments on the main page using Chrome. It works fine using Firefox (both latest versions).

Here's the error I get: http://i.imgur.com/d1AmDcc.jpg

*edit*

It seems the error is contained within the Azeroth Choppers news bit. Also strange is that it no longer loads my profile picture on the site. If I try to copy image location and put it in a browser on its own it gives me an error:

The requested page "/sites/default/files/styles/medium_avatar/public/pictures/picture-86664-1393539677.jpg" could not be found.

Sorry, but I'm enabling adblock again on PCGN.

I'm fine with the background and static advertising banners, but what totally is a dealbreaker for me is going to an article and 5 seconds later music blasts off and I see a flash advertisement for Invictus or whatever it is next to suggested topics below the article.

I can't even mute that shitty ad. Seriously, when I go to a news site I wanna read the articles and not be distracted by some ad that's trying to blow out my eardrums...

3

Hey. Next time (if you trust us enough to not block) can you click the ad and see where it goes? We're super picky about the ads we take... but use Google for backfill. Sometimes they serve crappy ads, Minecraft 'downloaders' or ones for super exploitative MMOs - so whenever we spot them we can block specific URLS. Can't see an Invictus ad in our review centre, but the hunt continues.

Regarding your podacast. Im quite a regualr listener to podcasts becase I have a hour bike ride everyday to work. I love gaming podcasts , one of my favourites being VideogamerUK ( give it a listen ). Now when i saw that you guys were doing one I thought excellent, a more PC centric cast for my eardrums to eat up. Now your content is fine but your audio is pretty terrible.. :( Could you look into levelling your mics please? I know you have the disadvantage of using Skype instead of all physically being there... but surely there are ways?

Apart from that , well done guys, love the site, love all my luvley Beta keys ;) PCgamesN has now replaced KotakuUK on my bookmarks bar.

Thanks

Found a dodgy link, guys. If I click on the 'All Reviews' link on the Trending Reviews box I get a big screen o' text. This is in Firefox on Win7. I tried it in IE on Win 8.1 and it offered to save a .json file. Don't know if this is still in beta - I didn't see it in IE on my desktop where I wasn't signed in.

So... currently, I find the front page (especially the top part of it) incredibly messy. Ads, requests for reviews of my steam games, user reviews, try these pay to win games, spotlight... plus, the introductions for the individual articles often just cut off with "...".
