League of Legends patch 5.6 is full of buffed, and ultimately happier, champions

League of Legends patch 5.6 is super buff, all rippling muscles and shiny abs. It looks like some champions weren’t getting enough love. There are a lot of them, and some are bound to occasionally fall by the wayside. Not to worry, though, if one of your favourites has been ignored. They might be in the list of 5.6 champions to get some special attention.

League of Legends champion spotlight tells the tale of Bard, and how to use him

The newest League of Legends champion is Bard: a roaming support. He’s rather unique, in that he has two unique passives, the ability to shackle and stun enemies together or against walls, heal his allies with health packs and leap himself and his team through solid terrain. If that hasn’t made your jaw drop, then wait till you hear about his ultimate - it makes anyone affected completely immune to all damage, allies, enemies and neutrals alike.

Riots latest champion spotlight deconstructs each of Bard’s new abilities, and we’ve got it below to help you make sense of this cosmic spirit.

League of Legends player behaviour at "record bests" despite missing Tribunal

The League of Legends Tribunal was somewhat unique outside the likes of Runescape - a system that allowed players to review and adjudicate on reports of bad behaviour in the community and help improve one of the best free games on PC.

It’s been down for nine months for reworks, and players are starting to miss it. Riot have apologised for the delay - while pointing to stats that show toxicity is already way down thanks to a few other behavioural measures.

How one streamer managed to get in a fight with Azubu, Twitch, Riot Games, Marc Merrill, and most of the internet

It took just a day and one stream for StarLordLucian to become the most controversial figure in eSports. All he did was create a stream devoted to Sanghyuk “Faker" Lee.

He’s had a DMCA takedown notice and lawyers investigating his activities. Even the president of Riot Games has taken to Twitter to say his stream “reeks of harassment and bullying."

It’s the story of how one legal loophole has exposed a flaw in eSports ownership.

League of Legends champion preview teases bard character with a stary campfire tale

Gather round League of Legends players, for Riot Games has a wondrous tale to tell. A new champion preview page has gone live, teasing the next roster addition to the world’s biggest MOBA. While cryptic at best, the page suggests the new champion will revolve around storytelling, song and the stars, via the skills of a bard.

Riot is building a League of Legends-shaped artificial reef off Australia’s coast

Imagine diving into the warm, clean oceans off the coast of Australia, dropping down among schools of incredible fish, only to find a reef formation in the shape of League of Legends champion Nautilus. Sounds insane, but plans are in place to make this a reality. Riot are building an artificial reef to celebrate their immensely popular MOBA.

Riot fine MeetYourMakers after manager threatened to take player's home

Monday brought the news that MYM’s manager, Sebastian “Falli" Rotterdam, had threatened one of his players, saying that if he left the team he would go after the player’s mother’s home. Riot have responded to the action, fining MYM €5,000 and indefintely banning Rotterdam from taking part in the LCS in any role.

However, they also say their “investigation found fault on behalf of both player and management."

League of Legends patch 5.3 continues to work on Deathfire Grasp item replacement

Riot has just deployed patch 5.3 to League of Legends, containing some light balance work in preparation for the much more anticipated patch 5.4, coming at a later date. The eventual goal is to remedy a removal of an in-game item, Deathfire Grasp, by replacing it with a more balance friendly item for mage assassins to use.

“We mentioned that 5.2 and 5.3 were going to be our Deathfire Grasp-removal patches," stated Riot in the foreword. “But now that we've been hard at work, we realized we could use an extra cycle to build confidence."

The Score sports website releases the first eSports mobile app

One of the things I’ve always complained about in eSports was that keeping track of them is basically a nightmare. You’re either into the scene enough that you hang out on all the forums and wikis and figure out what events are happening and where you can watch them, or you’re missing a ton of important stuff.

Enter Canadian sports website The Score, a mobile-focused sports website. They just released a mobile eSports app that will provide eSports news, track scores, and even live event coverage.

LCS team MeetYourMakers in contract scandal after threatening to take a player's family home

There’s a new PR disaster in competitive League of Legends. Word has come out of the European LCS that the MeetYourMakers team played some truly appalling hardball negotiation with their midlaner, Marcin "Kori" Wolski. After Kori balked at continuing to play with the team following a dispute over back-pay, the MYM manager decided go for the full Don Corleone treatment: he told Kori that if he didn’t come back to the team, he would be in breach of contract and that he would be permitted to seize Kori’s mother’s house.

Let’s repeat that: the MYM manager threatened to take his player’s mom’s house.

Garena's "all-feminine" LoL tournament goes horribly wrong with bizarre LGBTQ restrictions

Update 04/02/15: Garena have withdrawn the LGBTQ restrictions from their rule set after talks with Riot. They've issued a statement on the matter, which you can read below.

Update 03/02/15: Riot clarifies its more egalitarian stance on Twitter. "LGBT players are welcome at official LoL tourneys. We're working with partners to ensure consistency with our values across all regions."

Garena, the company the operates League of Legends through much of Southeast Asia and operates LoL eSports in the region, has issued a rules clarification for its women’s League of Legends tournament. In what can only be described as an organization running across a minefield to grab hold of a high-voltage cable, Garena has issued rules governing the participation of lesbian, gay, and trans women in their League of Legends tournament.

The rule, apparently, is one gay / trans player per team, per day. That’s just the kind of compromise guaranteed to make everyone happy and offend absolutely no one, right? Right.

Nvidia want MOBA players to buy a GTX 960

Dota 2 had 10 million players log in over December. And lest we forget, that’s the little fish - League of Legends has more active users than any other PC game.

Nvidia have caught onto the fact that MOBAs are “the most popular games available worldwide", and their players the perfect audience for mid-range GPUs. They’re hoping that LoL summoners will adopt the £159.99 GTX 960 - both for its “beautifully crisp, sharp image", and power requirements so low that the fans will turn off during play.
