League of Legends teases Butcher’s Bridge, the new map for Bilgewater event

Riot have been busy bees recently getting ready for the massive narrative-led Bilgewater: Burning Tides event. A key part of the event will be Butcher’s Bridge, a single mid-lane map that is based in the busy port side town of Bilgewater. It’s like nothing you’ve seen in League of Legends before, and you can grab your first look at it here.

Which is the most expensive MOBA?

MOBAs are free to play, but that doesn’t mean you can’t splash a little money their way if you fancy it. Funded by microtransactions, MOBAs have stores stocked absolutely full of new characters, costumes, and helpful boosters designed to make your fun even funner.

But if you were going to really dedicate yourself to a MOBA  - and we really do mean dedicate - just how much would it cost you to buy everything? We’re talking the works: everything in the official store. I decided to do maths for the first time since my GCSEs and add up the costs of three of the most popular MOBAs: Heroes of the Storm, Dota 2, and League of Legends. Then we’d know which is the most expensive MOBA of them all.

Fnatic at 8-0 following win over founder xPeke's Origen team

One of the highlights of the past week of pro League of Legends had to be the long-awaited showdown between the "Next Generation" crew of Fnatic and Origen, the team created by Fnatic's original captain and LoL squad founder xPeke. It wasn't quite a grudge-match, but it was a test to see who had benefited the most from the parting of ways between Peke and Fnatic at the end of last season.

The result was a firefight between some of League of Legends' most aggressive players.

Riot Games hire bestselling Warhammer writer to wrangle League of Legends lore

It’s the internationally unrecognised Total War: Warhammer day! Totally Warhammer, the totality of the time. Even when we’re talking about LoL, we’re really talking about Games Workshop.

Riot Games have appointed a new senior narrative writer to work on League of Legends. His name is Graham McNeill, and he is a bestselling Black Library author.

EU League of Legends caster Deficio suspended by Riot following tampering investigation

Riot have suspended one of their leading on-air personalities for tampering in EU LCS, as well as suspending a coach in the European division. After a cheating rumor (apparently false) prompted an internal investigation of the relationship between Riot caster Martin “Deficio" Lynge and the Copenhagen Wolves team, Riot learned that Lynge and the Wolves had been in talks to bring Lynge into the organization in a management role. Lynge had also spoken to other pro players about their joining Copenhagen Wolves, which amounts to tampering, as Riot defines it: “inappropriately influencing a player under contract with one organization to consider joining another."

It’s an embarrassing, if minor, black-eye for their broadcast team, but one that also illustrates just how fine a line that Riot’s LCS employees have to walk when it comes to the pro scene.

The new battle in European League of Legends is between its past and its future

This past week’s games in EU LCS felt like the start of a new era, one defined by the return of some of the game’s biggest names... and by the attempts of some of the oldest LCS organization to move beyond their past.

It’s too early to call this season for Fnatic and Spanish LCS team Origen, but their perfect start and first place tie does neatly sum up this new season of EU LCS.

League of Legends will ban harassers quicker with new system

League of Legends is pretty famous for a certain percentage of its community being ‘toxic’. Developer Riot is dedicated when it comes to stomping out harassment among players and making LoL welcoming to all though, and a new system being implemented in Europe could be the start of reforming player behaviour much quicker.

Riot are trying to make deep utility a "more appealing" option in League of Legends

The League of Legends public beta environment is where all its wonderful or wonky balance fixes make a nest first. Early this week players noticed that utility-focused champions, who provide benefits to their team outside of damage, were being fed mana in a different fashion. And that has profound implications for their casting over the course of a match.

Riot said their plan was to make plunging deep into the utility mastery tree more rewarding - but acknowledged the possibility that some players might lose out.

Fantasy eSports site AlphaDraft gets some major financial backing

Just a year ago, things like fantasy League of Legends was a fanciful novelty. Now, major investors are rushing to get in on the ground floor of fantasy eSports. Just today, AlphaDraft announced $5 million in financing... and its backers include the William Morris agency (now William Morris Endeavor) and none other than former NBA commissioner David Stern.

Fantasy sports have become insanely popular and lucrative, and with the rise of eSports-focused fantasy sites like Vulcun and AlphaDraft, eSports might just be their next great frontier.

Fair play to Nick Allen: the SKT-Fnatic bug, and the ambiguities of pro League of Legends

Fair play to Nick Allen: the SKT-Fnatic bug, and the ambiguities of pro League of Legends

It was a pivotal moment in one of the League of Legends Mid-Season Invitational’s most exciting matches. Europe’s Fnatic team seemed to be on the verge of what would have been an extraordinary underdog upset in the group stage. But right at the start of a crucial fight, something odd happened. One of Fnatic’s players appeared to suffer a bug that left him unable to contribute, and Fnatic were dealt a heavy blow. Fnatic’s game came undone shortly thereafter, and a lot of fans and observers were convinced that an underdog upset had just been destroyed thanks to a glitch.

Unfortunate and inconvenient, but was it unfair? Esports, taking place on computers, would seem to offer the possibility of perfectly fair, perfectly adjudicated competition. There’s no in-game referee or umpire making judgment calls, or looking the other way as a foul occurs just out of sight. But, just as in more traditional sports, perfect fairness remains an elusive and difficult goal. And in that gulf between the the ideal and reality, you’ll find Riot’s League operation manager, Nick Allen, trying to keep professional League of Legends fair, one judgment-call at a time.

SK Telecom yield League of Legends MSI title to China's EDG as Faker falls short

Korean League of Legends may have just suffered its most serious defeat since Worlds 2012. At the Mid-Season Invitational in Tallahassee Florida, in a five game series, China’s EDward Gaming defeated the vaunted SK Telecom team for the Invitational title.

You couldn’t even call it an underdog upset. EDG were in control of the series from the start, forcing SK to change mid laners late in the series and play catch-up to force a game 5. EDG made a convincing argument that China has well and truly arrived on the summit of League of Legends eSports.

Korea takes on China in League of Legends showdown at Mid-Season Invitational

Korean and Chinese League of Legends have been on a collision course this year as the two powerhouse eSports communities vie for LoL world title. Today, at the Mid-Season Invitational, Korea’s SK Telecom team (the 2013 World Champions) will play against China’s EDward Gaming in what could easily be a preview of the World Championship final.

At stake is a $100,000 grand prize and, more importantly for these two teams, an early verdict on whether China’s leading eSports organizations have managed to catch-up to Korea’s most venerable and accomplished professional gaming teams.
