Nvidia want MOBA players to buy a GTX 960

Dota 2 had 10 million players log in over December. And lest we forget, that’s the little fish - League of Legends has more active users than any other PC game.

Nvidia have caught onto the fact that MOBAs are “the most popular games available worldwide", and their players the perfect audience for mid-range GPUs. They’re hoping that LoL summoners will adopt the £159.99 GTX 960 - both for its “beautifully crisp, sharp image", and power requirements so low that the fans will turn off during play.

Earn enough points in League of Legends' Ocean Week, and Riot will put a statue in the sea

It’s easy to forget, up here in frigid Scotland, but it’s summer in the southern hemisphere, and Riot’s got its eyes on the beach. To celebrate Australia Day and New Zealand’s Waitangi Day, League of Legends players will be able to unlock a slew of rewards, including legendary skins, IP boosts and even an artificial reef, by winning games during Ocean Week

Riot: League of Legends player reporting does work, but "lacks direct feedback"

Player reporting in League of Legends isn’t strong on closure. You might tell on a teammate for assisting an enemy or otherwise ruining one of the best free games on PC - but you’ll never know how it ended, and some summoners have questioned whether the reports really do bring about change in the community.

“Reports matter whether you see the results or not," reassured one of Riot Games’ behavioural staff. “Absolutely."

League of Legends players are getting a mystery gift from Riot for being on their best behaviour

Riot has a giant sack of carrots that it’s using to seduce players over to the light side. Instead of just punishing the naughty, the League of Legends developer has been rewarding the nice.

To celebrate the end of the Snowdown event, Riot’s giving well-behaved boys and girls a special present to start 2015 on a positive note.

League of Legends Team Curse to stay together for 2015 - but under a different name

Curse Voice is one of two third-party apps for League of Legends approved by Riot earlier this year. It’s a VOIP tool that Curse have poured time and resources into - and made sacrifices for.

In order to be able to promote the app with other LCS teams, the plug-in creators have ended their official sponsorship of the US squad headed up by Steve ‘Liquid’ Arhancet. There’s been no acrimonious split - but Team Curse have had to relinquish the name that fans know.

NA LCS Expansion tournament concludes this weekend

For the last four teams hoping to join the North American division of the League of Legends Championship Series, this weekend represents the moment of truth. A mix of eSports hopefuls and veteran League of Legends players are fighting for two spots in the 2015 spring split.

For some of them, it would be a dream come true. For others, it would be a last chance to get it right.

Counter Logic Gaming fined $10,000 for poaching in League of Legends LCS

Counter Logic Gaming, on of eSports’ largest organisations, has been fined a hefty $10,000 for breaking LCS rules. The eSports giant has been found guilty of attempting to ‘poach’ player William “Scarra" Li, a player for rival organisation Dignitas.

The fine is the largest ever handed out by LCS, which highlights the severity of the case, and has been intensified by untruths told by Counter Logic Gaming’s bosses.

League of Legends patch 4.21 brings gifts for "many orphaned champions" (but not Warwick)

In past years, preseason follow-up patches like 4.21 have been conservative affairs - but this time’s different. Riot have taken the opportunity to fiddle with balance in the new League of Legends jungle, tweak early-to-mid-game gold flow, and solve a hairy problem named Warwick.

“We know everyone’s still getting adjusted to the new preseason, so we’ll be watching closely over the next while to see what new Warwicks come bubbling to the surface," wrote Chris ‘Pwyff’ Tom. “Please don't let it be Warwick."

League of Legends players suffer locked out spells; Riot pledge fix in next patch

Timing is everything in League of Legends. It’s the sort of game where not being able to mind your Ws and Qs can lose you a game.

That’s the complaint of a frustrated summoner, who found himself locked out of one of his abilities during a team builder match and discovered threads full of fellow players with similar problems. Thankfully, Riot have already worked out a fix - which they plan to pack into their next update.

At its peak, over 11 million people were watching the League of Legends World Championship final together

Riot’s tallied up its viewership figures for the League of Legends World Championship 2014, across the whole 15 day tournament and 100 hours of live broadcasts. Over the entire competition, over a 179 million hours of League of Legends was watched, compared to the 70 million hours in the Season 3 World Championship.

The final, which saw Samsung White defeat Starhorn Royal club in front of 40,000 spectators in Seoul was watched online, at its peak, by 11.2 million concurrent viewers. That’s more than double the population of my dear old Scotland. By the end, 27 million people had tuned in.

League of Legends dragon champ Ao Shin "on hold"; "We do intend to make him someday"

The white, wispy mane of early Ao Shin concept art suggested a champion who was barely there, and so he has proven. Scheduled for release behind at least two other League of Legends champions, the storm dragon has never been anything other than the distant prospect of electrical abilities - and is now officially on hold.

Rek'Sai is League of Legends' newest champion; she's underground, so you've probably never heard of her

League of Legends has its fair share of grotesque champions, and the roster of horrors has just been expanded, with Riot revealing Rek’Sai, the Void Burrower. She’s a nasty piece of work, burrowing underground, creating tunnels, waiting to jump out and bite unsuspecting champions.

She’s a terror, but has a bit of trouble dealing with another new champion, Kalista, as well as Kevin Bacon.

League of Legends patch 4.20 is all about “strategic diversity” and lasers

League of Legends’ 2015 preseason has begun, which means Riot are free to patch, update, and alter their MOBA. The mantra for this upcoming season’s changes is “Strategic Diversity," say Riot.

“Our high-level philosophy is we want to offer you more paths to victory so that your in-game decisions matter just as much as the champions you pick."

If you’ve a read through of the patch notes you’ll see how they’ve achieved this.

Why "under the radar" League of Legends champion Sona needs nerfing

If you’re looking for a D&D point of comparison, blue-mopped Maven of the Strings, Sona, is the bard of League of Legends. Not only because she plucks at a magical zither, but because nobody’s quite sure of the best way to play her.

Nevertheless, she’s the subject of some upcoming nerfs in one of the best free games on PC. Riot explain that Sona is “actually really strong".

Riot on League of Legends toxicity: 95% of players never need to be punished

Much is made of League of Legends' unfriendliness to newcomers, and it’s true Riot didn’t hire an in-house psychologist for no reason. But as the MOBA’s 2014 season winds down, the developers have decided to celebrate the better behaviour of most of their players.

Every player who hasn’t been chat restricted or account suspended this season will get a four-win IP boost. And that’s 95% of active players.

Riot's rewarding League of Legends players with Influence Points, but only if they've been good

Riot’s continuing its attempt to curb negative behaviour in League of Legends, but this time, instead of punishing the bad players, the developer is rewarding all the good boys and girls.

In what Riot says is a “first step", players who haven’t been suspended or had chat restrictions in the 2014 season will receive a 4-win Influence Point boost, to be doled out across the next week.
