Dota 2 player recreates Valve's "failed" Faceless Void concept in-game

Yesterday, Valve released their highly anticipated Faceless Void remodel, which was slated as a compendium reward back at the Dota 2 International last year. In their blog post, they shared some “failed" concept designs for the hero - one of them being a version playing on the joke of giving the hero a face.

One Dota 2 player and modeller liked the comedic design so much, they’ve created their own version of the hero in-game, while pleading with Valve for it to be added to the game officially.

Dota 2's Faceless Void gets a facelift; see Valve's hilarious "failed" concepts

Once upon a time, back at the 2014 Dota 2 International, Valve promised to rework the hero Faceless Void as part of a compendium reward. Nearly a year later, and Valve have finally come through, after what was revealed to be quite the troublesome task according to the devs. Instead of a complete overhaul, the master of time has received a ground-up rebuilding, with better textures and a new set of legs.

But the real fun lies within Valve’s discarded designs, which are amazing in their own right - ranging from time-walking dinosaurs to timeless lobsters.

Vote goat: Goat Simulator developers want to put their goat in Dota 2

I know exactly seven things about people. Here are two. People like goats, and people like MOBAs. Throughout most of human history, these two interests have been separated, held apart by a lack of commonalities. No more!

Coffee Stain Studios, the Goat Simulator lot, want to get their goat right up inside a MOBA, specifically Dota 2. And the developers would like a wee bit of help.

Valve vow to "do a better job of walking people through what we're doing"

Valve don’t have a marketing department. Never have. All of the complex ARGs, the calculated silences, they come straight from the coders working on Dota or Team Fortress.

But the company’s characteristic quietness has occasionally amplified community upset - for instance, when Dota 2’s Halloween Diretide event failed to arrive last year - and business boss Erik Johnson reckons they need to do better.

Steam racks up 125 million active accounts, with help from Dota 2 and Counter-Strike

Yeah, course: Steam’s numbers are always going in right direction. But it’s the sheer velocity of the thing that’s exciting. As Valve pull the platform into new shapes with SteamVR, there are now 125 million people using it as a platform for buying and playing games. That means a full fifth of Steam’s current userbase has shown up since September.

Two games in particular might have had something to do with it.

Dota 2 sees over one million players concurrently for New Bloom event; servers struggle with load

The players of Dota 2 have been enjoying the fruits of the latest content update, with the return of the New Bloom festival. With it, a new game mode has been made available, pitting teams and their tamed Year Beast against each other.

The mode and its rewards have attracted over one million concurrent players in fact.

Unfortunately, the game mode is only made available during limited 10-minute periods at random times throughout the day. The results have caused the Dota 2 network to either put players in lengthy queues, or crash altogether as everyone piles in to play the Year Beast Brawl.

Dota 2 New Bloom festival to return; features new Winter Wyvern hero

Dota 2 is on the precipice of a new content update, with the return of the New Bloom festival, and it’s Year Beast. But immediately, there’s some noticeable differences between this year’s, and last year’s event. First - it will introduce a new original hero to the game: Winter Wyvern. She’s a huge frosty dragon who’s got a thing for books. Also in the update is a new model enhancing arcana, this time being granted to Crystal Maiden in the form of a frostbitten cloak.

Valve have began the long tease with a light-hearted comic, and a New Bloom trailer.

Valve open new curated Steam Workshops. Creators have made more than $57m since 2011

For the first time in history virtual hat designers are making more money than actual milliners.* Valve’s revealed that since launching the Steam Workshop in 2011 content creators have made $57 million.

Until now you could only sell creations for Valve’s games - Team Fortress 2, Dota 2, and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. That’s going to change as Valve invite other games to sell through their workshops, too.

Dota 2 Asia Championships prize pool breaches $2 million dollars

China’s Dota 2 Asia Championships is aiming to topple that of Valve’s 2013 International, with a mighty crowdfunded prize pool of its own. With the help of an in-game digital compendium, the tournament has raised over $2 million dollars, and rising.

With over 22 days left until the grand finals occur, there’s a good chance that the prize pool will become the second largest in the world.

Dota 2 modeller builds GabeN Shopkeeper in time for New Bloom

The disappointment of yet another cancelled Frostivus has given way to preparations for the annual Dota 2 springtime event, New Bloom. And the thawed fingers of crafty community modellers have begun to yield miniature masterpieces. Some are items based around the themes of Chinese New Year, Chinese history and springtime, as requested by Valve - but this one belongs to the cult of GabeN, which lasts all year round.

Dota 2 heralds the new year with over ten million unique players last month

Dota 2 is Valve’s most popular game right now, and probably will be for a long time yet. In the last month, the game has clocked over 10,123,495 (so close to being sequential) unique players, and rising.

Although it’s not really a surprise is it - Dota 2 does have a habit of outnumbering all the games in Steam’s top 100 most played, combined.

The best Dota 2 Heroes for beginners

So you’ve finally gained access to that 'Dota 2' game everyone on your Steam friends is playing all the damn time. You boot it up, hit the 'find match' button, and after a short waiting period you’re in your first game. “All pick" the announcer bellows, as you’re presented with a dazzling selection of heroes to choose from. Going by the infallible logic of “pick the best looking", you pick Invoker.

That was my thought process when I got my hands on Dota 2 back in 2011; you can see the results of my first game here, but you can already guess the outcome. I did not perform well.

Luckily I found some patient souls from Sweden who taught me everything I know today, and now I want to try and pay it forward. Here’s the best heroes for you beginners out there.

Dota 2's Frostivus may be canceled, but that's not stopped Valve shipping patch 6.83: Shifting Snows

A couple of weeks ago, Valve announced that they’d canceled Christmas in Dota 2, again. While it’s many players were obviously sad, they were reassured it was for the best: with a tease of a new engine update, due early next year, instead taking priority.

But that hasn’t stopped Valve and Icefrog from deploying patch 6.83: chock full of hero balancing, frosty treasures and the return of the snow covered map.

There’s also even a sneak peak at a new and upcoming hero: Winter Wyvern, but only if you have the eyes of an eagle.

Red Bull's Seattle Dota LAN is cooking up a randomised team tournament with over 100 players

In just a few hours, Red Bull will begin hosting one of the biggest Dota 2 LAN event in Seattle, second only to Valve’s own Dota 2 International earlier this year. The tournament isn’t your usual royal rumble of pro players either. Instead, over 100 everyday players have signed up to take part, with a sprinkling of seasoned professional players.

That’s not all either. Teams will be completely randomised after each round, with the attending pros being seeded in each of the teams throughout of the day. Players personal stats will be recorded, with the personal best nabbing an all expenses paid trip to any single Red Bull LAN event in 2015.

Dota 2's Frostivus event is cancelled, again; team to instead work on engine update

For the third year in a row, Dota 2’s Frostivus festival has been canceled. But unlike the previous two, it won’t be replaced by another e.g. The Greevling, Wraith Night. Valve’s Dota 2 team have made a statement on the matter, and their excuse is rather exciting.

Valve are planning an engine update to Dota 2 in the first half of next year, and committing resources to a winter themed game mode would sap too much manpower from this exciting addition. But rejoice, as Valve have assured that this doesn’t mean we won’t see feature filled patched in the near future.

“We are already hard at work on our next major update," said Valve. “Although we will continue to avoid building new game modes until the engine improvements come along."
