Roshan moves house (ever so slightly) in Dota 2's Rekindling Soul update

“Even the land itself is not above being modified," boast Valve of the map changes they’ve made to Dota 2 overnight. “It’s moving day for Roshan."

Roshan hasn’t moved far - but in a manner befitting the creepiest of the creeps, the land around him has shifted to accommodate his new location. Elsewhere, patch 6.82 brings changes to couriers, the way match stats are displayed, and the abilities of Bloodseeker and Phantom Lancer. The Rekindled Soul in question is Shadow Fiend - returning with a “frightful" new look.

ESPN president says eSports is "not a sport": "Mostly, I'm interested in doing real sports"

Oh, ESPN - you were doing so well at internet comms. First, Valve triumphantly announced the news that the 2014 Dota 2 International would be broadcast live by the monolithic US sports network. And later, an unnamed source close to ESPN reported they were “delighted" by their inaugural Dota 2 viewing figures.

For a while there, it really looked like the MOBA had established a foothold for games in mainstream sports coverage. At least until somebody slid a dictaphone in front of ESPN president John Skipper.

Dota 2 to receive long awaited Techies update next week; we're all doomed

The update that everyone’s been waiting for over four years is just one week away from becoming a reality. The “Techies" update isn’t only promising a new hero - which is one of the most infamous heroes in the game - but a slew of other features. The madness of All Random Deathmatch is making its debut along with a new All-Hero challenge, egging you on to win a match with each and every hero in Dota 2. And we’ll also see the introduction of the compendium stretch goals, such as new music and ballsy taunt gem.

Oh, and don’t forget the bug fixes too.

It's not all doom and gloom: EG.Fear returns to Dota 2

The fallout from this year’s Dota 2 International has affected nearly every top tier team. Teams have reflected on their recent performance, and made drastic changes to their team rosters to try and strengthen their future prospects. Many professional Dota 2 players have left their teams as a result of this great roster shuffle: Na’Vi’s own leader ‘Puppey’ announced his departure only last week.

It’s not all bad news though. EG’s veteran player ‘Fear’ has returned to the squad in rather spectacular fashion.

System Shock 2's SHODAN voice actress on board for Dota 2 announcer pack

Irrational Games are gone. But SHODAN voice actress Terri Brosius is still about, and so is husband Eric - the sound engineer who distorted her voice into the terrifying monotone of the mother of all malevolent AIs.

Both are down for the idea of a SHODAN announcer pack for Dota 2 - and Night Dive Studios, the outfit who ported System Shock 2 to Steam, have convinced Valve. But they have one reservation.

Watch this: a stunning fan-made recap of the 2014 Dota 2 International

The 2014 Dota 2 International was huge. Not only did it boast the biggest eSports prize pool in history, but it also received a “delighted" response from ESPN's coverage. Chinese team Newbee took home the grand prize of over $5 million dollars and international fame, but the road there was a long one.

The two week event is a bit of a sleep-deprived blur to me, but this beautiful fan-made recap of the entire tournament does a good job recreating it in all its glory. A must watch.

ESPN "delighted" by Dota 2 viewing figures; expect more eSports coverage in the future

While there were a few people who tuned into ESPN’s coverage of the Dota 2 International and became distressed, confused and, in some cases, downright angry, the sports broadcaster was “delighted" with how the coverage went.

The apparent success of ESPN’s International schedule has, a source close to the broadcaster told The Daily Dot, led to it looking to expand coverage of eSports.

Here's what BBC Newsnight made of Twitch

The BBC’s flagship news and current affairs programme ran a feature of Twitch last week. Newsnight asked: “Who would want to watch teenagers just clicking away playing their video games all night?"

The report that followed was better-balanced than you’d hope - but it’s still caused minor uproar in the streaming community.

NewBee wins the 2014 Dota 2 International

NewBee have beaten ViCi Gaming in the Dota 2 International 2014 grand finals for a total of over $5 million dollars. The Chinese team have had a rollercoaster of a tournament: only last week they were fighting elimination from the playoffs. But since then they stormed through the brackets to secure their place in the grand final on day one of the main event.

The first place prize ensures that each player will receive at least one million dollars each, and automatically places them as the highest earning eSport players in the world.

ESPN2's coverage of the Dota 2 International is just too much for some viewers

The growth of eSports, you could assume, has laid to rest the tired old arguments of what constitutes a sport and how Dota 2 or League of Legends don’t fit the bill. There are fewer and fewer things that separate traditional sports and eSports, and the latter becomes more like the former every year.

It looks like there are still plenty of folk who aren’t ready for eSports to be considered real sports, however. And there are quite a few who are genuinely outraged, because outrage is a compelling hobby. The Dota 2 International has been airing on ESPN2, and people have taken to Twitter to express just how devastating this is.

The Dota 2 International grand finals are tonight; final prize pool $10,931,105

The Dota 2 International 2014 grand finals are here. Sixteen teams have battled over the past two weeks to have a shot at the Aegis of Champions, and with it a slice of just under $11 million dollars; the winner of which will take home over $5 million. The mammoth best of five is between two Chinese teams: ViCi Gaming and NewBee. It’ll mark the first International where fan favourites Na’Vi have not made it to the finals.

The broadcast is starting right now over on Twitch, and you won’t want to miss it for the world.

Dota 2 International main event: Day Two

Today was a tough day in the International main event: teams were going to be eliminated from the tournament. Between Na’Vi, Cloud9, IG and LGD, two teams were destined to have their International dream come to a halt.

For those stung with disappointment, there was always the All-Star game to fall back on, and boy did Valve deliver. Spoilers ahead as I dissect day two of the Dota 2 International main event.

Dota 2 International main event: Day One

Day one at the main event has come to a close. The upper bracket was populated by some of the best teams in Dota 2, demonstrated by their previous performances in last week’s playoffs. But only one could make it all the way to the grand final, and the rest would be exiled to the lower bracket for one last chance at retribution.

What transpired was no less than phenomenal; a perfect start to this four day event.

What to expect from the Dota 2 International main event

The Dota 2 International main event kicks off in just under an hour, and it’s set to be the biggest eSports event in history. A record-breaking prize pool that dwarfs some of the world's most popular sports like The Masters, and just a whisper away from that of the NBA. Eight prestigious teams from around the globe will fight between a crowd of 17,500 at Seattle’s Key Arena.

And if you think it stops there, you’re in for a loud surprise. Valve are going to release the second most anticipated thing next to Half Life 3.

Techies.
