Tune into the Red Bull Battle Grounds Dota 2 finals: Team Secret vs Invictus Gaming

It’s grand final time for the Red Bull Battle Grounds, where we’ve managed to weed out two prestigious teams out of a whopping twenty. Team Secret and Invictus Gaming, who both received invites to Valve’s Dota 2 International, will fight to the death in a best of five.

If you want to gauge which team shows the most promise going into the International in August, this is the match to watch this Sunday.

If you're good enough, you can play at this year's Dota 2 International 2015

Valve have raised the curtains on the ten lucky Dota 2 teams that have earned a direct invite to this year’s Dota 2 International 2015. Among the lineup is last year’s champions, Newbee - who took home the lion’s share of over $10.9 million dollars; the biggest eSports prize pool in history.

Even more exciting however, is Valve’s debut of the Open Qualifiers: two public tournaments that will feature up to 1024 teams from each of the region groups, hosted by FaceIt (Americas, Europe, Southeast Asia) and Perfect World (China). Any team can sign up, and the winner of each will earn a place in their respective regional qualifier with the rest of the professional teams.

Take a gander at the stream below, where Invictus Gaming will soon be duking it out with HellRaisers. The CIS/Russian team has just challenged their Chinese opponents to a game of table tennis, as well, which might be a chance for the losing team to regain some of its honour.

The Dota 2 International 2015 prize pool hits $5 million dollars in just over two days

Just over 60 hours after it was released, player purchases of the Dota 2 International 2015 Compendium has skyrocketed the competitions prize pool to over $5 million dollars. Only 25% of the actual proceeds from player purchases go towards the pot, yet players have raised $3.4 million dollars at the time of writing, leaving Valve with a cool $10.2 million dollars gross profit from the sales.

Valve clarify Dota 2 gifting restrictions; "we didn't have a better solution"

Valve have recently gone on record to clarifying the seemingly bizarre gift restrictions implemented into Dota 2. Any item that’s bought via Dota 2 store is at the mercy of a week long ban on gifting, trading or being put on the game’s community market. With the introduction of the 2015 International Compendium, this has left some generous players, who were planning on gifting the item to friends and family, unable to do so.

The cause as it turns out is the rapid growth of credit card fraud, which are “not really traceable". With the week long period in place, it gives Valve and credit card companies enough time to stem the flow of fraudulent purchases.

All bets are on: the Dota 2 International 2015 gets its crowdfunding Compendium

Valve’s digital betting book and all-round tournament almanac is back. This time, the studio have seeded the Dota 2 International prize pool with over a million dollars, but are shooting for $15 million in player contributions - and they’ll probably get it, too. Last year’s Compendium garnered $10.9 million by the time of the International Grand Finals, dwarfing the $2.8m total collected in the initiative’s inaugural year.

Valve massively revamp competitive Dota 2, announce Dota Major Championships

There’s been a lot of angst in the Dota 2 eSports community this year. Valve’s hands-off approach to the competitive scene allowed for a ton of well-regarded, grassroots tournaments series to pop up... but nothing that really caught on the way The International has. Dota 2 is a game with almost nonstop competition year-round... but none of it is particularly important or popular outside of the month or two leading up the The International.

Valve have heard the complaints and the fears, and today they’ve made another massive announcement: Dota 2’s competitive calendar will now include four official “majors" a year, one for each season.

The China qualifier of the Dota 2 Red Bull Battle Grounds is about to kick off later tonight. Four of China’s most prestigious teams will compete: LGD, Invictus Gaming, EHOME and Newbee - the latter still enjoying the fame of winning Valve’s Dota 2 International last year. The four will fight it out to see who gets to join other regional champions from Southeast Asia, North America, Russia and Europe in the playoffs in early May.

And with each tournament which marks the fast approaching return of the next Dota 2 International, all eyes are on the teams to see who’s favoured to win.

Dota 2 and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive are bigger than Steam was two years ago, and they're still growing...

Over the last couple of years Dota 2 and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive have exploded, stealing the two top spots on Steam’s most played list, and remaining there as if steel-pinned into concrete blocks. It’s difficult to think of anything that could replace them.

But something more interesting is happening. The number of people playing Dota 2 and CS:GO is growing at such a rate that they threaten to become bigger than every other game on Steam combined. We spoke to James Gray of SteamCharts.com to see what’s going on.

Dota 2 player recreates Valve's "failed" Faceless Void concept in-game

Yesterday, Valve released their highly anticipated Faceless Void remodel, which was slated as a compendium reward back at the Dota 2 International last year. In their blog post, they shared some “failed" concept designs for the hero - one of them being a version playing on the joke of giving the hero a face.

One Dota 2 player and modeller liked the comedic design so much, they’ve created their own version of the hero in-game, while pleading with Valve for it to be added to the game officially.

Dota 2's Faceless Void gets a facelift; see Valve's hilarious "failed" concepts

Once upon a time, back at the 2014 Dota 2 International, Valve promised to rework the hero Faceless Void as part of a compendium reward. Nearly a year later, and Valve have finally come through, after what was revealed to be quite the troublesome task according to the devs. Instead of a complete overhaul, the master of time has received a ground-up rebuilding, with better textures and a new set of legs.

But the real fun lies within Valve’s discarded designs, which are amazing in their own right - ranging from time-walking dinosaurs to timeless lobsters.

Vote goat: Goat Simulator developers want to put their goat in Dota 2

I know exactly seven things about people. Here are two. People like goats, and people like MOBAs. Throughout most of human history, these two interests have been separated, held apart by a lack of commonalities. No more!

Coffee Stain Studios, the Goat Simulator lot, want to get their goat right up inside a MOBA, specifically Dota 2. And the developers would like a wee bit of help.

Valve vow to "do a better job of walking people through what we're doing"

Valve don’t have a marketing department. Never have. All of the complex ARGs, the calculated silences, they come straight from the coders working on Dota or Team Fortress.

But the company’s characteristic quietness has occasionally amplified community upset - for instance, when Dota 2’s Halloween Diretide event failed to arrive last year - and business boss Erik Johnson reckons they need to do better.
