World of Warcraft patch 6.2 preview: back to the skies

This week sees World of Warcraft patch up to version 6.2, and there’s a set of pretty drastic changes coming. Leading the charge is the ability to take up your flying mounts and soar through the lands of the Warlords of Draenor expansion, a zone previously limited to on-foot encounters. “While fun and efficient, [flying] undermines the sense of fun and danger," explains Ion Hazzikostas, World of Warcraft’s game director. So what led to Blizzard deciding flying was cool?

World of Warcraft is about to reclaim character names from inactive accounts

In the decade of World of Warcraft’s existence, quite a few characters have been birthed and named. Should you be in the market for creating a new character right this second, you can probably imagine that trying to find a unique name is quite problematic. That’s why this week, with the launch of patch 6.2, Blizzard will be reclaiming the names of any character that has been inactive for a while.

World of Warcraft patch 6.2 will unleash the Burning Legion on June 23rd

Blizzard are ready to unleash hellfire on World of Warcraft players next week, as patch 6.2 floods over Draenor. Inside is a brand new zone: the Tanaan Jungle, the Hellfire Citadel raid, Shipyards expansions for Garrisons, Timewalking dungeon events and more.

But don’t take my word for it - in normal Blizzard fashion, there’s a fiery trailer to kick off the whole thing.

Blizzard will lift the ban on flying in World of Warcraft's Draenor soon

Blizzard will lift the ban on flying in World of Warcraft's Draenor soon

Blizzard broke hearts when it revealed that there’d be no flying in Draenor last year. Only ground travel, they said; go explore all the cool things that we’ve made, they demanded. Then Blizzard stomped on the shards of broken hearts by confirming that flying would never, ever be possible in Draenor, or in future expansions. You could hear the anguished screams from space.

This is the Blizzard that got rid of the Diablo III Auction House, however; the Blizzard that threw out artefacts in Heroes of the Storm because people didn’t want them. It’s a developer that has become quick to change in the face of feedback. And that’s why, eventually, you’ll be able to soar above Draenor.

Blizzard have no plans on flying mounts in Warlords of Draenor, or beyond

It’s always been expected that Blizzard would eventually patch in the ability to fly again in their latest expansion, Warlords of Draenor. But in a recent interview with Polygon, lead designer Ion Hazzikostas has gone on to say that not only does Blizzard not intend to put flying back in Warlords of Draenor, but any future expansion too.

"At this point, we feel that outdoor gameplay in World of Warcraft is ultimately better without flying," explained Hazzikostas. "We're not going to be reintroducing the ability to fly in Draenor, and that's kind of where we're at going forward."

Leeroy Jenkins almost made it into the Warcraft movie

Ask anyone who their favourite Warcraft character is and there’s a typical collection who are likely to crop up. Orgrim Doomhammer is one, and we already know he’s in the Warcraft movie thanks to these great CGI images. But another name is very certainly Leeroy Jenkins. Perhaps not quite as lore friendly as purists demand, but a fan favourite none the less.

It’s no surprise then that he almost made it into the movie.

Take the best selfie in World of Warcraft and win a trip to Blizzcon

Blizzard are well known for jumping on the fun wagon and getting players to engage in friendly competitions, but these are often in the form of competitive tournaments. Their latest bit of fun is a little different: it’s all about making sure your selfie game is on point.

The WoW Selfie Scavenger Hunt requires you to pout for the camera in a variety of spots each week, and the grand winners will bag themselves a trip to Blizzcon this November.

World of Warcraft's three million missing players will come back, says lead game designer

World of Warcraft's subscriber base has taken a thoroughly reported hit over the past couple months, having spiked around the release of the most recent Warlords of Draenor expansion before falling again sharply.

In the space of a month, over three million subscribers seemed to have evaporated into thin air. That still leaves Blizzard with around seven million players, which is more people than you could ever sit down and name, but it's an unprecedented tumble for the record-breaking MMO.

Lead game designer Ion Hazzikostas reckons the dip is cyclical however, and that those players will be coming back aaaany day now.

Blizzard clean up World of Warcraft bots with more than 100,000 six-month bans

Blizzard have laid down the law in their biggest MMO, World of Warcraft, by issuing more than 100,000 six-month bans to players found to be botting. It appears that players that used the notorious “Honorbuddy" bot to mindless farm honor in PVP have been hit hardest, resulting in a storm of begging on the game’s official forums. But Blizzard are having none of it.

“Cheating of any form will not be tolerated." stated Blizzard. “We’re committed to providing an equal and fair playing field for everyone in World of Warcraft, and will continue to take action against those found in violation of our Terms of Use."

World of Warcraft drops down to 7.1 million subscribers

Activision’s latest earnings call has revealed that Blizzard’s mammoth MMO, World of Warcraft, has lost just over 3 million subscribers since last quarter, when their latest expansion, Warlords of Draenor was launched. Nevertheless, Activision “expected" this “consistent" decline, and still remain happy that the game is still the “No. 1 subscription-based MMO in the world."

Blizzard incentivises revisiting old dungeons with Timewalking

World of Warcraft patch 6.2 is now live in the Public Test Realm. Blizzard revealed the 6.2 PTR patch notes yesterday, but kept one new feature under their hats until now: Timewalking. 6.2 introduces seven weekend events, and two of those events will be Timewalking weekends, where you’ll be able to venture into old-school dungeons with a new difficulty.

WoW Tokens have already shed almost a quarter of their value

It’s only taken a single day for Blizzard’s WoW Tokens, which can be redeemed for World of Warcraft game time, to dip in value. WoW Tokens can be purchased for $20 or 30,000 in-game gold. The latter of the two prices can change with the in-game market, however, and it has. You can now buy WoW tokens for almost 25 percent off their original price.

WoW Tokens go live tomorrow in the Americas and Australia / New Zealand

The WoW token, which functions a lot like EVE’s PLEX, goes live tomorrow in the Americas and Australia / New Zealand. The token will sell for $20 USD / $25 AUD, and it’s starting price in-game will be 30,000 gold, though that will fluctuate with supply and demand.

It’s going to be a big change for the economy of World of Warcraft, and one that will likely make a lot of elite players very happy.

World of Warcraft’s WoW Token will release soon, prices will flux depending on market forces

Blizzard recently announced the WoW Token; a tradable in-game item that can be redeemed for 30 days worth of game time. It essentially allows players to pay for their WoW subscription using gold made in-game, much like the PLEX system in EVE Online.

WoW Tokens are due to make their way into the game very soon, and Blizzard have started to detail how they will work.
