Before the Fall Patch: long-awaited Battlefield 4 fixes due today on Origin

DICE will implement a “fairly massive" list of Battlefield 4 fixes today. You can tell the 1.16GB update’s a biggie because it has a name rather than a number: the Fall Patch will address many of the issues that’ve most irked players in recent months, including problems with the HUD, ‘netcode’, player movement and peering through reticules.

Battlefield 4 "Autumn Patch" sheds all the bugs; further improves netcode

It’s time for some spring autumn cleaning in Battlefield 4, and there’s hefty long patch notes to go with it. Most notable is the further improvement to the infamous netcode, which is now set automatically to high as default to all users. A slew of game modes are also being added to Obliteration Competitive sub-game mode. Of course, it wouldn’t be a proper patch without weapon changes too.

Battlefield 4: Final Stand evokes memories of Battlefield 2142

With Final Stand, Battlefield 4’s upcoming piece of DLC, DICE is presenting their vision of the wars of tomorrow while also looking back to Battlefield 2142.

“With Final Stand, we knew from the start that we wanted to evolve the Battlefield experience and offer weapons and vehicles that behave differently than anything else on the battlefield," write DICE’s Kristoffer Bergqvist and David Sirland. “Taking place on the arctic landscape of Russia, where the scientists of today are experimenting with technology that will define the battlefields of tomorrow."

War is cheap in Battlefield 4: it's free for a week and on sale

Battlefield 4 has really struggled to shake off its terrible launch. Even after countless patches and updates, it’s still got that reputation. If you’ve been put off snatching it over fears that it remains broken, then now might be the time to find out if it’s improved. EA is offering up the game for free, for a week. That’s from now until August 14th.

You can download it from Origin and play the core game and it’s multiplayer without dropping a penny

EA hire eBay exec as their new CTO to help improve their games "as live services"

EA have made a Chief Technology Officer of an eBay veteran, the company revealed last night. Ken Moss comes from eBay’s Seattle office, where he headed up their Marketplace Technology, Science and Data organisation.

Moss will be responsible for overseeing the digital platform that has fuelled EA’s shift to “games as live services" - a move they’ve visibly struggled with over the past year.

“My goal is simple," writes Moss on his LinkedIn page. “to create services that make people’s lives better."

Battlefield 4 patch will put an end to adamantium shield

Battlefield 4’s DLC, Dragon’s Teeth, brought with it EA’s very own version of Captain America’s adamantium shield. The ballistic shield could deflect bullets, sure, but it could also deflect armour-piercing tank shells and, with a single hit, kill other players. Battlefield’s next patch will see an end to that.

It’s not the only thing being changed. DICE have been looking at “how to decrease the feeling of getting killed when behind cover." Hopefully they’ve managed this by preventing of you getting killed when behind cover. Just one of the reasons we put Battlefield 4 on trial for being a broken, bug-ridden mess.

Battlefield 4: Dragon's Teeth adds a floating restaurant and a vanishing lake

Battlefield 4’s upcoming expansion, Dragon’s Teeth, has nothing to do with the Argonautica. There will be no soldiers sprouting from canines or hunts for golden fleeces. Knowing this, as I do, makes me extremely sad.

It will, however, feature gunfights on a floating island and the ability to drain a lake. That makes the lack of Greek mythology easier to stomach.

Battlefield 4's launch was a disaster because it was ambitious, says EA boss

When Battlefield 4 was announced, some worried aloud that it didn't look nearly different enough from its predecessor released just two years before.

But EA head Andrew Wilson reckons the game's problems - and boy, Battlefield 4 has had problems - stem from exactly the opposite issue: Battlefield 4 was too big an idea to fit its own development cycle.

Battlefield Hardline brings the noise to city streets, along with tasers and ziplines

Battlefield Hardline brings the noise to city streets, along with tasers and ziplines

If you were skeptical that Battlefield’s move to the urban streets would prevent it being the bombastic battle ground it has been previously, have no fear. There may not have been a tank in sight, but Battlefield Hardline is just as bombastic as it always has been. Just replace some of the explosions with wailing sirens and you’re almost in the right frame of mind.

Shown off at the E3 EA press conference was a 32 player Heist game, Cops v Criminals duking it out in the streets. The criminals task was to steal an item from an armoured truck and get it to a helicopter extraction. The cops had to bring the noise and justice hammer down on them. Cue destructive car chases and baseball bats to the skull.

Battlefield 4's netcode is the subject of today's community tested update

With all the Battlefield: Hardline talk, you might have forgotten that Battlefield 4 is still kicking about and still needs a bit of work. Today, DICE has rolled out an update to improve the game’s netcode, minimising the delay between input and action.

It’s the first update to be developed using the Community Test Environment, where premium members can test and provide feedback on developing features. “The number of changes possible in this update would be difficult to pull off without the continued support from our community, both through direct constructive feedback and telemetry data gathered on the CTE," said DICE.

Battlefield 4 falls further as microtransactions appear

It was never going to look good. An expensive game with premium membership options also getting microtransactions. That’s what’s happening in Battlefield 4 today, with DICE and EA making a move that was predicted before the game even launched.

You can now throw money at the rickety game for the privilege of getting Battlepacks. DICE calls it a “shortcut to catch up with [your] friends on the Battlefield." A premium shortcut.

SWAT's going on 'ere, then: Battlelog update unearths references to rumoured cop-themed Battlefield: Hardline

Something acronymed BFH is coming to Xbox 360, PS3, Xbox One, PS4 and PC, according to icons buried in today’s Battlelog update.

What is it? Nobody really knows. But Battlefield redditors have cross-referenced the icons with the codename of a supposed SWAT-styled EA shooter expected later this year: Battlefield Hardline.

Battlefield 4 Premium ad sells future DLC on promise of shields, drones and train crashes

Battlefield 4’s next expansion is named Dragon’s Teeth, after its two-handed ballistic shields - the dirty great lizard molars players will be hiding behind once it’s released.

DICE are convinced the shields will irrecoverably change the dynamics of the game, and they may well do - but they’re hardly the most exciting feature in upcoming Battlefield DLC. Instead, we bring you bullet trains crashing into tanks and tiny drones drifting at head-height through forests.
